Medicine and Compassion

Minneapolis, MN US
May 16, 2026

We all want to be compassionate clinicians. In the current environment levels of stress, "compassion fatigue", and burnout are high. In this conference we will explore definitions of compassion and suffering, discuss how we can expand our compassion, and learn some meditation practice to train to make ourselves to be more compassionate clinicians. Finally we will have personal reflection and small group discussions, followed by a large group debrief. The conference will be led by Dr. David Shlim, co-author of the book Medicine and Compassion with Chokiya Nhima Rinpoche, and his memoir A Gentle Rain of Compassion. Dr. Shlim teaches internationally on Medicine and Compassion. Dr. Courtney Burnett will also give a lecture on incorporating compassion into our medical practice. Dr. Burnett is a Healthpartners hospitalist, national speaker, and author of Difficult Gifts.

Target Audience

The Target Audience is particularly practicing health care providers, including physicians and advance practice clinicians, as well as nurses and social workers, and resident physicians. It will be relevant to all specialties.
