Lunch & Learn: Responding with Compassion: Trauma-Informed Care (TIC) for the LGBTQ+ Community

This will be a virtual meeting through Teams. This learning opportunity, Responding with Compassion: Trauma-Informed Care (TIC) for the LGBTQ+ Community, is brought to us through the support of the HealthPartners LGBTQ+ Resource Group and Comprehensive Care Advocacy Department. And will feature an outside speaker, Paul Blom. Paul is the owner and CEO of Right at Home, a local in-home care and assistance provider for seniors in the twin cities. Paul was a founding board member of Training to Serve, an educational initiative that equips aging-services professionals to better understand and address the unique needs, challenges, and barriers experienced by LGBTQ+ older adults.

Target Audience

This Lunch & Learn is designed for healthcare professionals, care coordinators, case managers, social workers, behavioral health staff, member services representatives, and anyone who works directly with patients, members, clients, or colleagues. The session is particularly valuable for individuals seeking to strengthen their ability to provide affirming, inclusive, and person-centered support to LGBTQ+ individuals.

Learning Objectives

Following this learning activity, participants will be able to:

  • Describe the impact of historical, social and community-level trauma on LGBTQ+ individuals' interactions with healthcare and social service systems
  • Identify unique healthcare needs, disparities and barriers experienced by LGBTQ+ populations, particularly LGBTQ+ older adults
  • Discuss trauma-informed communication techniques that promote safety, trust, respect and patient engagement
  • Demonstrate strategies for reducing assumptions and increasing culturally responsive interactions with LGBTQ+ individuals and families
