Polarized Theater of the Oppressed: A Workshop for Healthcare Workers and those Experiencing Homelessness

Minneapolis, MN US
May 8, 2026 to May 10, 2026

Over the course of three days, theater director Chen Alon (joining via Zoom) will share principles and practices of Polarized Theatre of the Oppressed (TO) and guide participants through activities that build trust between two “polarized” groups that are sometimes positioned adversarially — healthcare workers and those experiencing homelessness. The residency will enable “housed” and “homeless” groups to see the other, deepening relationships amongst key stakeholders working towards greater housing security. TO offers the creative tools to build these relationships while also activating an aesthetic space that enables collective analysis and “rehearsal” towards transformational change that moves us towards greater health equity.

Target Audience

The target audience of this training is two-fold. First, we aim to have healthcare workers, including physicians, as a core component of the training. We believe that the training is most relevant to health workers involved in primary care practice but do believe it offer benefit to anyone involved in caregiving. Second, we aim to involve people with lived experience of homelessness. We envison equal participation of both types of audience. Participations of both groups as a mixed audience is critical to facilitating the relationship-building, dialogue, learning and growth of this training.

Learning Objectives

Following this learning activity, participants will be able to:

  • Identify ways that caregivers and care systems can elevate untold stories that connect housing and health
  • Apply strategies to utilize self-reflection, courage and creativity to interrupt harmful narratives about homelessness and addiction that are perpetuated by caregivers and care systems
  • Discuss the use of creative expression to support policy change and the emergence of new forms of care
  • Identify ways to connect with joy and play when working for housing justice
